Welcome back to another episode of the Homegrown Liberty Podcast, this is episode 35. Today we’re continuing our conversation with Beau and Ashley.
Last week we left off talking about keeping rabbits and reducing dog food costs with rabbits. So I’ll be giving some thoughts on the benefits of keeping rabbits in reference to the products with the meat and manure. We also talk a little bit about raw feeding, and my thoughts on if it’s wise to do straight raw diet vs a hybrid approach. Then I answer a question on the grass clipping harvest, methods to store and keep it without letting it mold.
After that I get into some methods to utilize their space with a high degree of efficiency and cut down on winter feed costs. We get into some strategies for developing and changing their lawn to make an area for bee food, cut flowers, higher protein fodder for the animals, beautifying the area, and reducing the time cost in maintenance as well as fuel costs. So all around some really fun ways to change the current wasteful use of the lawn, and change that to something that is productive, beautiful, food producing, feed cost reducing, and maintenance reducing.
I always look for ways to cut down on my labor, and make the time I have to invest into maintenance into a multi pronged product. I want to take what took me 4 hours a week to achieve relatively little, into 2 hours of work that eliminates $20 worth of feed that I would have purchased from off the farm, while at the same time increasing biodiversity, attracting beneficial insects, feeding bees, and every productive thing I can possibly fit into that little bit of time that I need to invest.
We want to make every moment count for more than it does now. Because if I can do that in a dozen different places on the homestead, then what I do is by thoughtfully designing my workload, I produce far more than I could have, while at the same time building into my life, time to go fishing with my 5 year old, swing the 3 year old, tickle the 2 year old, and smooch on my wife.
Oh and I give some pro-tips on mulching to help your fruit trees be productive and defeat the chicken scratching menace.
But now let’s jump right into rabbits and livestock guardian dogs for our third and last episode in this series with Beau and Ashley!
[CONSULTATION WITH BEAU AND ASHLEY]
I had a ton of fun talking to those two, and since I know you’re listening, thanks again for being on the show you two! I hope to do this again and see how things are going with y’all, keep up with the progress and see what you two are getting into next.
I’ve got an exciting announcement coming up in the next episode! This one is published while I’m in Missouri on my 10 day consulting trip, so if you’re trying to get hold of me, I’ll be busy almost every day of my trip filming, helping homesteaders, farmers, and families develop plans and goals for their properties. I really like to be able to get onto the property with a person and really help them hammer out a plan and a vision for where they want to be in several years, and give them the confidence and knowledge to be able to tackle those dreams with gusto! I’m all full up on consults for this trip, but if you want to email me, there’s always the possibility someone might cancel at the last minute.
So if you want to be put on the reserve list, hurry up and email me! If you’re listening to this in the future, sorry, you’re too late, it was ages ago! What are you doing paying any attention to this! It’s like 2057 and this was recorded in 2016 ya crazy nut! Alright, all joking aside, I’m going to be on the road till the 11th of September, and when I get back I’m incommunicado for a couple weeks cause I’ll be busier than a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. But OH boy do we have some fun stuff coming down the way for ya’.
Oh, and I’ll be around the DFW area from the 27th through the 29th of October and people are already emailing to book me for consulting slots for that trip. I’ll be driving from Saline LA which is midway between Shreveport and Monroe, and driving straight across along I-20 to Fort Worth to teach at a Survival Podcast Workshop hosted by none other than Jack Spirko who is the mellifluous voice behind The Survival Podcast. I’ll be teaching about Soil Building and making raised beds, essentially teaching my method for building amazing amounts of rich living soil in a very short amount of time. The workshop might be sold out before you hear this, but if you’re in East Texas or anywhere somewhat close to my route, you can get the same lesson first hand from me with a property consult!
That about wraps up my news and info for this week. Tune in next week for a special announcement! I’m super excited about this one! But I have work to do, so I’ll have to talk to you guys next week!
